Toyota has given the GR86 a meaningful round of updates for 2026 — and Toyota says much of it traces back to lessons learned on the racetrack. Announced on August 6, the refreshed coupe opens for order in Japan on August 28, priced from ¥2,936,000 for the base RC up to ¥3,616,000 for the top RZ automatic.
What's new on the 2026 Toyota GR86 in Japan
The 2026 update focuses on how the car feels rather than how it looks. Throttle calibration has been revised for a more linear response between pedal input and acceleration, and Toyota widened the chamfer on the manual gearbox's shift interlock by about 0.5 mm to smooth out shift feel. Toyota says the changes reflect lessons from its Super Taikyu endurance racing program, where near-standard GR86s have been campaigned for several seasons — the program's data also fed into revised electric power steering tuning.
Safety hardware takes a real step forward too: EyeSight moves from a two-camera to a three-camera setup, adding a wide-angle mono camera tuned for the GR86's low ride height and roughly doubling the system's field of view. The GR86 was already unusual in offering EyeSight on manual-transmission models — driver assistance is still rare on stick-shift sports cars in Japan — and this update sharpens that system further rather than introducing it for the first time.
There's also a new exterior color, Solid Gray — the first time a gray finish like this has returned to the lineup in nine years, dating back to a limited-edition color on the previous-generation 86.
How the updated GR86 compares with the Subaru BRZ
As always, the GR86 moves in step with its twin. Subaru announced a closely parallel round of updates for the BRZ on July 30 — the same wide-angle mono camera added to EyeSight, plus a Super Taikyu-informed shift lever for manual cars — so the two-car family enters 2026 spec together. They remain among the more affordable ways into a new rear-wheel-drive, naturally aspirated manual coupe in Japan.
